There are a lot of freakishly fast cars available. But, which one takes the cake? Which one is the King of Lunacy? What car leaves you with fear in your eyes every time you drive it? What is the scariest car ever made?

Kinja'd!!!

I humbly submit the Lamborghini Miura. The Miura was one of the first mid-engine production cars, it was phenomenally light, powerful, and had a fuel tank in the front causing the front end to go light the more you drove. A nasty combination. But what is your opinion?

I drove a Viper GTS once about 10 years ago. Ever since, I wake up screaming every morning.

996 GT2. All the power of a Turbo, with none of the AWD control to save your ass when you overcook a corner, and you will with that engine hanging out the back. Only car I've driven on a track that I was scared to push.

It's not a matter of if this car will kill you, but when.

Anything old and heavy without power brakes. It didn't seem like such a big deal when that's all you knew...but man, getting in them today it's cheek clenching.

Growing up working in a Dodge dealer, I've driven many Vipers, and I concur. The Gen I and II Vipers were scary cars. If not for the fact most people who drove them simply were not ready for the power delivery. We cut our teeth on small blocks and high winding turbo cars.

There surely was no reason to wind that 10 out. It made power just off idle, right when you weren't ready for it.

Yeah, man. I had driven some fast cars at the time, but I just wasn't ready for those levels of low-end power with no driving aides.

I went for a ride in an early twin turbo Viper. That thing was stupid. Vipers are absolutely terrible at driving in general in stock trim... bumping it to around 1100 HP and leaving the suspension alone did not help the matter. When the turbos came on the tires spun. It didn't matter if it was at 10 MPH or 100 MPH, and the car decided which direction you were going far more than the driver.

I can not imagine trying to take something like that around a track. Poo would almost certainly escape.

There was an article on the FP that hit the nail on the nail-topper, but it was too much power in too little weight with too little downforce and a little too much actual lift. They eventually fixed it, but the first iteration of the 917 was double-trouble crazy bonkers.

Viper has been said a few times, and that's my best guess (never driven one. Anybody wanna let me?).

My next best guess is the Pontiac Fiero. My good friend's father owned one, and they worked on it together. My friend CLAIMS (and, as far as his reliability, I believe him, but the statement...) that, at idle, the exhaust manifold on the thing was GLOWING ORANGE. I mean jeez. Now, I've never met a car that had fuel lines running on the same side of the engine as the exhaust manifold (I haven't met so many cars), but I'd still think a Fiero in a Rear-end collision is about one of the most terrifying things ever.

That name tho. It's like Pontiac knew.

I can only imagine. About 5 years ago, right in the heart of the recession, my poor old man had to sell his beloved H1 Hummer (which was pretty freaking awesome). He was offered a straight-across trade for a Viper (which KBB says was a pretty close match as far as sell values were concerned), and, despite considering it for a moment, my dad decided against it. I'd give him more shit about it, but he didn't want to sell the Hummer in the first place, so that seems mean.

Also, any Cobra (replica) with enough power, e. g. the Weineck Cobra with its 10.2 litres and 1200 PS ... and a weight of 980 kg. That's 0.8 kg/PS.

Here's a clip from a German TV show that might give you an idea of just how silly that is.

We got to have some really fun times in H1 Convoys in the WA mountains. It is absolutely, wouldn't-believe-it-if-I-didn't-see-it, incredible at climbing over some seriously batshit obstacles. Got to drive it a bit up there too (and I was about 16-17 at the time. Surprised my dad let me do that looking back).

Generic but reasonable list. ;)

I'd also leave the Carrera GT out of it, as there's tires that'll make it behave a lot better these days.

So awesome dude. I was thisclose to having one as my first car. Was on a road trip with my dad when we passed an Army surplus AM General for sale for like 15 grand. We stopped and looked, and totally would have bought it, but I was like 14 at the time, so we had no way of getting it home.

NP at $15K all day. KBB for a used one last I heard was well over $30K now (for the civ model, not a HMMV). To be 100% honest, it was NOT a comfortable vehicle. It was clearly a military vehicle with minimum creature comforts added to make it feel like a civilian vehicle. My mom hated riding in the thing. I wasn't a huge fan either (although, because BADASS, I did anyway at pretty much any opportunity). It seems like it's one of those vehicles you have to love to really enjoy.

I recall me and my dad waiting at a left-turn light downtown. We were going to flip a U to get into the lot that was to our left. There was no on-coming traffic, and, in a rare instance of "fuck this", my dad jumped the yellow curb-type median, onto the sidewalk, down a beauty-bark embankment, and into a parking spot, which he promptly parked in. The H1 did all of this like a Miata autocrosses: It was designed for it. One of my dad's top 5 badassery moments.

Never driven one but I would venture to say the Venom GT is up there! Sooo much power but they seem to at least be able to handle it (mostly). =)

On a serious note though - driving a borrowed Nissan Primera (i think?) was kind of sketchy. Spastic turn in, rapid throttle response at low speed but at freeway speed you can mash the pedal up and down and nothing really happens, understeers even at low speed. Brakes might as well have been off a bicycle.

You have to wonder if the right tires could fix the Viper as well. Or maybe something as simple as adjustable coilovers.

That's actually a good point. I'm pretty sure, though, that there are Viper owners who have already tried this. Given the massive advances in tire technology, rubber that wide should be able to tame even the Viper's ridiculous power to some extent if you find the right compound.
